We collect, pack, and deliver fresh produce within a short timeframe, using as little packaging as possible. We send most produce loose within the box but when we do use packaging, it is carefully considered with food waste reduction in mind.
We have rescue depots in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch and collect a lot of produce locally in these regions to reduce food miles. However, we also source produce country-wide to provide a good variety and support growers nationally. We work with over 70 growers across New Zealand who share our values and are committed to reducing food waste and creating a more sustainable food system in Aotearoa.
Although food is wasted across the supply chain, Wonky focuses on reducing wastage at the farm gate. We do not ask growers to plant for us but instead, purchase produce that was due to be grown for other retailers. We call this model "Grower-Led Eating".
Founded in 2021, Wonky collaborates with 70+ New Zealand growers, understanding their challenges in fruit and veg production for local and export markets. We're dedicated to fairly compensating growers, offering a reliable secondary market. Regardless of imperfections like broken asparagus or hail-damaged apples, we prevent wastage by collecting all produce.
At the end of each week, after packing up all boxes, we donate any extra produce to Wellington City Mission and KiwiHarvest in Auckland. These organizations redistribute food and other essentials to people in need, and we're proud to support their important work.
By rescuing produce and working with growers who share our values, we’re helping to reduce food waste, support sustainable food chains, and create a more equitable food system for all.
