Where does your meat come from?

Our meat is 100% NZ-raised, sourced from local farmers we know and trust. These farmers prioritise animal welfare, use regenerative or sustainable farming practices, and raise their livestock on pasture. We work directly with producers to ensure transparency and traceability – no imports, no mystery, just honest local meat.

For more details about our producers and their stories, check out our blog.

What's the difference between grass-fed and grain-fed?

Grass-fed means the animals graze on pasture and eat grass for most or all of their lives. This is the natural diet for cattle, sheep, and other ruminants, and it's how most NZ livestock is raised. Grass-fed meat tends to be leaner and is often considered more flavourful. It's also better for the environment and animal welfare when done well.

Grain-fed means animals are fed a diet that includes grains like corn, wheat, or soy – often in feedlots. This is more common overseas and can produce fattier, more marbled meat. However, it's less natural for the animals and can involve intensive farming practices.

All our meat is grass-fed, free-range, and raised the Kiwi way – on pasture, with care.

Why are you adding meat? I thought you were helping growers?

We are helping farmers – this is just another way to do it. While we started with fruit and veg growers, we're now also backing livestock farmers who raise their animals ethically and care for their land responsibly.

These farmers face real challenges too – competing with cheap imports, dealing with opaque supply chains, and struggling to get fair recognition for doing things right. Many consumers don't even realise they're eating imported meat instead of supporting local producers.

We saw a problem that needed addressing: NZ farmers who prioritise animal welfare and sustainable practices weren't getting the limelight, while imported "mystery meat" with vague labels was flooding supermarket shelves.

By offering their meat through Good Groceries by Wonky, we're helping connect these farmers directly with customers who value quality, transparency, and supporting local. It's the same mission – championing the people who grow and produce our food – just expanding to include more of the food system.

Why did you decide to start sourcing meat?

We saw a problem that needed addressing. Too often, Kiwis have become disconnected from their food, with most supermarket meat coming from large-scale systems where transparency is lacking and labels are vague. Many consumers don't realise they're eating imported meat, while NZ farmers who do things right aren't getting the recognition they deserve.

We've been approached by local farmers who are frustrated by the amount of imported, poorly labelled "mystery meat" flooding shelves. They wanted a partner who could champion quality, transparency, and proper farming practices.

Our team includes vegetarians, vegans, and those reducing their meat consumption. Our approach has always been about respecting food and the people who produce it. For those who do choose to eat meat, we believe it's important to know where it comes from and how it was raised, rather than turning a blind eye.

By connecting people directly with local farmers who prioritise animal welfare and land stewardship, we're offering a more transparent and respectful alternative – one that values the animals, the land, and the farmers who do things differently. If meat isn't for you, you can simply skip those products and continue enjoying all the other wonky goodness.

Are you meat products ethically raised?

Absolutely. Every meat product we offer is NZ-raised, grass-fed, and free-range, sourced from farmers and brands we know and trust – like Higher Grounds farm and Harmony. We work with local producers who prioritise animal welfare and treat their land with care.

We're committed to transparency and traceability – you can find detailed information about where your meat comes from on our website and in your customer portal. While we can't always guarantee this information will be printed on the packaging itself (as that's sometimes out of our hands), we know our producers and we're always here to tell you the full story. No mystery meat, no vague labels, just honest food from farmers doing things right.

Where can I find out where the meat & cheese are produced?

You can read about our producers and their stories on our blog here. We work directly with producers and aim to include origin information on product labels wherever possible. For the full story behind what you're eating – including details about the farms, farmers, and cheesemakers we work with – head to our blog or check the product descriptions in your portal. Transparency is non-negotiable for us, and we're always happy to answer questions about where your food comes from.

Where can I find out what’s coming in the NZ Farmers Meat Box?

You can check what's coming in the NZ Farmers Meat Box on our box contents page here. We update this regularly so you'll always know what to expect in your next delivery.

How do you choose what chilled items to offer?

Every product must meet at least one of our "good" criteria. We prioritise direct relationships with growers, makers, and suppliers, uphold quality standards across every category, maintain clear transparency with all partners, and favour seasonal availability where possible. Every product has a clear reason for being included, and we're always happy to share the story behind what we stock.

Why do you offer meat if not all of it is rescued?

Because it's not just about rescue – it's about doing good in all the ways that matter.

The meat industry actually generates very little waste (which is great news!), so there's not the same rescue opportunity as with wonky veg. But we've been approached by local farmers who are frustrated by the amount of imported, poorly labelled "mystery meat" flooding supermarket shelves – and the quality often isn't great either.

We thought we'd throw our hat in the ring and offer the opposite.

Our meat offering is about championing:

  • Local farmers who treat their animals and land with care
  • Full transparency – you'll know exactly where your meat comes from and who raised it
  • Quality and traceability – NZ-raised, grass-fed, free-range, and honestly labelled
  • An alternative to regular retail mystery – no vague labels, no imported products with unclear origins

We're applying the same Wonky lens we've always used for fruit and veg: Is it local? Does it support good people doing good things? Is it produced responsibly? When the answers are yes, it earns a place in your basket.

So while not all our chilled products are rescued, they're all chosen with purpose – whether that's diverting waste, backing better farming, or simply giving you a better, more trustworthy option than what's on the supermarket shelf.

Is the quality the same as butcher or supermarket meat?

Our meat is butcher-quality – NZ-raised, grass-fed, free-range, and fully traceable. Unlike much supermarket meat, we prioritise local producers, label honestly, and back our claims with real sourcing stories. No mystery meat, no vague labels, no imported products with unclear origins.

Are your chilled products rescued too?

Here's some good news: the meat industry actually generates very little waste, which is brilliant to hear! Pretty much all of the animal gets used, so there's not the same rescue opportunity as with wonky veg.

But here's where we think there's still a flag to fly: local meat, supporting Kiwi farmers, and encouraging people to choose non-mystery meat.

We've been approached by local farmers who are frustrated by the amount of imported, poorly labelled meat flooding supermarket shelves – and frankly, the quality isn't great either. So we thought we'd throw our hat in the ring and offer the opposite: NZ-raised, grass-fed, free-range meat that's fully traceable. You'll know exactly where it comes from and who raised it. While it might not be "rescued" in the traditional sense, it's still doing good – supporting local producers, backing better farming practices, and giving you complete transparency.

When it comes to other chilled items, that's where the wonky magic happens. We're stocking things like cheese offcuts from artisan makers, products with packaging flaws, overruns, and items that don't quite meet strict supermarket specs but are absolutely delicious. Each product has its own rescue story – whether it's surplus stock, cosmetic imperfections, or simply good food that needs a second chance.

So while not everything in Fridge Fillers is rescued, everything is good – whether that's diverting waste, supporting local, or championing quality and transparency over mass-produced mystery.

Where does your meat and cheese come from?

We work with trusted NZ producers who prioritise quality, animal welfare, and traceability. Some items are also rescued from surplus.

Can I buy chilled or refillable items?

Yes! Both are available now. Chilled items (meat, cheese, deli goods) are part of our Fridge Fillers range, and Refillables include pantry staples like lentils, rice, pasta, and oats in minimal, planet-kind packaging. Wonky Flowers (smaller seasonal bunches) will also be available soon.
